German Christmas markets over the course of time
Christmas markets characterize our cities in the run-up to Christmas and often play an important role in social interaction in December. An old custom has become a seasonal tradition that is now popular across countries and is even imitated internationally. In Germany alone, there are more than 2,500 Christmas markets every year.
The origin of Christmas markets
Christmas markets are a German “invention” whose roots can be found in the Middle Ages. December markets were originally used to buy food and handicrafts for the long winter months. The transition from the December market to the Christmas market was gradual. They were distinguished by their names or by the range of goods on offer. Some towns compete for the title of having the oldest Christmas market in Germany.
in Germany. Bautzen, Frankfurt and Munich can claim the 14th century. Leipzig, Halle, Augsburg and Dresden (the famous “Striezelmarkt”) have been documented since the 15th century. The tradition has since spread throughout Germany, so that today almost every town and many villages organize their own festive version of a Christmas market. There are now also many variations in terms of its duration and name. One particularly famous Christmas market is the Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt. With over 400 years of history, it is one of the most traditional Christmas markets in the world and attracts millions of visitors from all over the world every year. It is famous for its gingerbread, grilled sausages, “Zwetschgenmännla” and handmade toys. In the Nuremberg Christ Child's prologue to the opening of the Christmas market, it is referred to as “the city of wood and cloth”, which refers to the original construction of the Christmas market stalls.
A place of community
Christmas markets are far more than just places of trade - they are places of community that unite generations. People meet here to chat with each other and enjoy drinking mulled wine, eating gingerbread and experiencing the festive atmosphere. In addition to all kinds of handcrafted products, the markets also offer Christmas decorations and culinary delicacies, which are often made according to traditional recipes. In addition to the traditional stalls, many markets also offer a varied entertainment program with music, theater performances and other atmospheric events. Christmas carousels, ice rinks and fairy tale sessions are offered especially for children, making their visit a special experience and the Christmas season a magical time.
Touristic appeal
Nowadays, our Christmas markets attract tourists from all over the world who want to enjoy the special atmosphere and traditional German customs during the Advent season. The glow of the lights, the smell of roasted almonds and the festive presentation make them an indispensable part of cultural events in Germany.
The Leipzig Christmas market
One particularly noteworthy Christmas market is the large Leipzig Christmas market in front of the old town hall. It has been held since 1458 and is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. Its importance and popularity are also reflected in the fact that there have only been a few interruptions to the annual event over this long period. Käthe Wohlfahrt has also been represented at the Leipzig Christmas market with a large selection of products since 1990. In the middle of the historic old town, against the unmistakable backdrop of the old town hall, over two million visitors a year can experience the Christmas market's diverse cultural and culinary offerings. Over 300 selected stalls offer traditional arts and crafts from the Ore Mountains, unique gift ideas, high-quality household goods as well as toys and knitwear. A gourmet alley and numerous offers for children round off the experience. The daily Advent program is also attractive for returning day visitors.
Käthe Wohlfahrt on Christmas markets worldwide
In addition to the Leipzig Christmas market, Käthe Wohlfahrt is represented at around 40 other Christmas markets in Germany. This logistically challenging, strong presence is a wonderful opportunity to present the wide product range of the well-known year-round Christmas specialty stores to a broader audience beyond their regional location boundaries. Käthe Wohlfahrt offers an impressive selection of traditional Christmas decorations, Christmas tree baubles, nativity figures, pyramids and much more at the Christmas markets. The artistically designed, walk-in Christmas houses are often a visual highlight of the market and attract numerous visitors looking for unique gifts and Christmas decorations. In addition to the German markets, Käthe Wohlfahrt is also represented at Christmas markets internationally, including in cities such as Strasbourg, Merano, Zurich, Innsbruck, Tokyo and Chicago. These seasonal appearances abroad help to spread knowledge of the German origins of most Christmas decorations, raise awareness of ancient craftsmanship and spread the love of Christmas around the world.
